Nichicon Corporation launched sales of the ESS-U2M1, a large capacity single-function energy storage system providing excellent cost performance, after having sold over 340,000 household energy storage system units since shipments began in 2012.
Going forward, Nichicon will continue to contribute to the adoption of single-function energy storage systems aimed at power self-sufficiency and as a countermeasure to rising concerns over disasters.
In 2012, we launched our first household energy storage system in response to scheduled blackouts and energy supply instability after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Since then Nichicon has sold more than 340,000 energy storage system units in Japan.
As electric utilities reduce the rates they pay for solar power each year, electric power costs are steadily rising. Nichicon anticipates an increase in the need for the personal home consumption of electricity produced from solar power generation systems. In particular, by 2019(ten years after the 2009 launch of the surplus electricity buyback program) we expect to see 450,000 to 570,000 residential electricity end-users and are anticipating needs in the transition from additional electricity sold from energy storage systems to personal home consumption.
Moreover, from this fiscal year, amid the promotion of Net Zero Energy House (ZEH) policies to reduce CO2 and measures to retrofit existing homes with insulation, needs are increasing due to the installation of energy storage systems on newly constructed and existing homes as well as the launch of energy storage system subsidies on solar power generation systems for personal home consumption.
Additionally, in preparation for widespread blackouts affecting approximately 27 million homes (based on a Central Disaster Prevention Council estimate) , the need has also arisen for strong homes prepared for disaster equipped with solar power generation and energy storage systems .
In response to these demands, Nichicon launched the ESS-U2M1 large capacity single-function energy storage system, providing excellent cost performance. In normal operation, this new unit offers the same charge/discharge capacity, 30% (3.3 kWh), which is stored for emergencies. This is a large capacity model (11.1 kWh) compared to the previous model (7.2 kWh).

The ESS U2M1 prepares you for blackouts, earthquakes and other disasters that can strike without warning and is designed to store 3.3 kWh of power at all times during normal operation, enabling the continued use of standard household power for approximately seven hours whenever a power loss occurs. With a large capacity totaling 11.1 kWh, in addition to the 3.3 kWh stored for emergency purposes, homes are supplied with 7.8 kWh of energy that can be used effectively in daily household activities. When fully charged, standard household appliances including living room light fixtures, refrigerators, LCD TVs and mobile phone chargers can be used for up to 24 hours.
Providing excellent cost performance, the large capacity ESS-U2M1 is the optimal energy storage system, able to realize power self-sufficiency and provide a countermeasure to rising concerns over disasters. This is the optimal model for customers who have already installed a solar power generation system.

Up to now, all but a portion of Nichicon brand energy storage systems were mainly sold directly to home builders, but as with the hybrid energy storage system launched in June, this model will be sold directly to home builders, as well as solar power generator system manufacturers, building materials trading companies and through a variety of other routes.
